Privacy policy
Last updated 19 October 2026
TapMap (tapmap.beer) is a crowd-sourced map of bars with good craft beer, run by Sean Charleston in New Zealand. This policy explains what TapMap collects, why, who else handles it, and what you can do about it. It is written for New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020.
The short version
- You can browse the map without an account.
- Signing in with Google gives TapMap your name, email address and profile picture. Your email is never shown to anyone else.
- Your comments, votes and dog endorsements are public, but they are linked to an anonymous account number, never to your name or email.
- Your location never leaves your device.
- No ads, no tracking cookies, and your information is never sold. Visits are counted anonymously.
- You can delete your account from the menu at any time, and everything you have posted goes with it.
What TapMap collects
When you browse
- The companies that host TapMap keep standard server logs: your IP address, browser, the pages you load and when. These are used to run and secure the service.
- Vercel Web Analytics counts visits: the page, the site you came from, your approximate location, and your device type, operating system and browser. It sets no cookies, isn't tied to your account or IP address, and forgets a visit after 24 hours.
- Your device remembers your light or dark mode choice and whether you have opened a bar's details before. That stays on your device.
When you sign in
- From Google: your name, email address, profile picture and a Google account identifier. TapMap shows you which account you are signed in with, and may use your email to contact you about your account. It never sends marketing email.
- What you do: the bars you add, your votes, dog endorsements, comments, votes on comments and reports, each with the time.
- A sign-in session stored on your device, so you stay signed in.
Your location
If you allow it, your browser tells TapMap where you are so the map can show your position and centre on it. This happens on your device: your location is not sent to TapMap or stored. As with any map, Google receives requests for the map area you are looking at.
What other people can see
- Your comments, your votes and your dog endorsements are public. Each is linked to an anonymous account number rather than your name, but someone who looked closely could see that the same account wrote several comments or voted on several bars.
- Your name, email address and picture are never public.
- Your reports are seen only by you and TapMap's moderators.
- Whether your votes carry extra weight, and who the moderators are, is not shown.
Who else handles your information
These services run parts of TapMap and handle information on its behalf. Some of it is stored or processed outside New Zealand.
- Supabase, for the database and sign-in, with servers in Sydney, Australia.
- Vercel, which hosts the website and counts visits, mainly in the United States.
- Google, for sign-in, the map, place search and place photos. Google's handling of your information is covered by the Google Privacy Policy, and the map is used under the Google Maps/Google Earth Additional Terms of Service.
- Buy Me a Coffee, only if you choose to leave a tip. TapMap sees only what Buy Me a Coffee shares about your tip.
How long it is kept
- Your account and activity are kept until you delete your account.
- Deleting your account removes it, along with your votes, dog endorsements, comments, votes on comments and reports, straight away. Bars you added stay on the map, because they are public places, but are no longer linked to you.
- Server logs and database backups are kept by the hosting services for a limited time before they are overwritten.
Your rights
- You can ask to see the personal information TapMap holds about you, and ask for it to be corrected.
- You can delete your account from the menu, or ask for it to be deleted.
- If you are unhappy with how your information has been handled, please get in touch first. You can also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
Age
TapMap is about bars, so it is for people aged 18 and over.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it. Significant changes will be pointed out in the app.
